Distinctive Rock Surfaces

The distinctive rock formations that shape the beauty of the valley were created by pyroclastic flows from the massive eruption of Mount Aso long ago, which were eroded over a long period, resulting in the deep and beautiful rock surfaces we see today. You can enjoy various expressions throughout the year, with fresh green in spring, lit up in summer, colorful autumn leaves in fall, and snow in winter.

2.Reviews

Walking through Takachiho Gorge, I was able to see many scenic spots. The highlight was the viewing platform overlooking Manai Falls. Its beauty was divine, and I believe many of the photos featured in guidebooks were taken here. It was so popular that there was a queue to take photos. After enjoying Manai Falls, I walked along the promenade on the north side. This path leads to the Kami-Bridge, and along the way, I enjoyed the ever-changing columnar rock formations in the valley.

Boat at Manai Falls

Takachiho Gorge is a valley with vertical rock surfaces, at the bottom of which the Gokase River flows quietly. The 17-meter high Manai Falls, surrounded by beautiful greenery, drops magnificently. The scenery is fittingly divine for Takachiho, known as the “City of the Gods.” There is a promenade along the valley, and it is recommended to walk to the Takachiho Bridge, not just around Manai Falls. There is a special viewing spot where you can see three bridges of different ages and heights, the Kami-Bridge, Takachiho Bridge, and Kamitsu Takachiho Bridge, at the same time. You can also enjoy the ever-changing beauty of the valley.

Panorama of Takachiho Gorge

Manai Falls is the symbol of Takachiho Gorge and a major attraction for tourism. There is a viewing platform on the promenade, from which you can look down on the waterfall. There is also a popular boat rental service, which allows you to enjoy the view of the waterfall from below on a boat.
