In Japan, there are numerous dishes that are unique adaptations of culinary traditions from Europe, China, India, and more.Today, we’re going to explore some of these iconic dishes with foreign roots.

Curry Rice

Curry rice traces its origins to Indian cuisine. A Japanese take on traditional Indian curry, this dish features vegetables and meat simmered in a curry sauce and served over rice. The use of curry roux and the freedom to adjust the spice level and ingredients are distinctive features.


Omurice

Omurice, an abbreviation of ‘omelette rice’, is a western-style Japanese dish. It consists of chicken fried rice wrapped in an omelet. Though often seasoned with ketchup, variations topped with demi-glace or cream sauce also exist.


Hayashi Rice

Hayashi Rice is another dish with a western origin. This meal is made by topping rice with beef and onions simmered in a demi-glace sauce. The sauce is typically prepared using a base of red wine and tomato ketchup, creating a rich, sweet flavor.


Croquette

The croquette, known as ‘korokke’ in Japanese, also has its roots in western cuisine. It is a deep-fried dish made from a mixture of mashed potatoes, meat, and vegetables, coated in breadcrumbs. The croquette is characterized by a crunchy exterior and a soft, moist interior. It comes in a variety of flavors, including seafood and curry.


Menchi Katsu

Menchi Katsu is another dish of western origin. It is a breaded and deep-fried meatball made from a mixture of minced meat (usually a combination of beef and pork), onions, breadcrumbs, and eggs. The outer layer is crispy, while the inside is juicy. It is best enjoyed freshly fried.


Grilled Gyoza

Gyoza, with its origins in China, is particularly popular in Japan. The Japanese version, grilled gyoza, involves wrapping pork and vegetables in a thin dough and then grilling them. The gyoza are known for their crispy bottom surface and juicy interior. They are typically enjoyed with a dipping sauce made from soy sauce, vinegar, and chili oil.
