Natural scenery

1.Basic Information

Mount Aso, an active volcano located in Kumamoto Prefecture in the Kyushu region of Japan, is famous for having one of the largest calderas in the world, measuring about 25km in diameter. The unique landscape of Mount Aso was formed by a massive eruption about 100,000 years ago, creating a large crater and resulting in the current caldera. Surrounding the area, beautiful natural landscapes such as Komeduka and Nabegataki, as well as numerous hot spring facilities, can be found.

Mount Aso

Mount Aso consists of five representative mountains: Takadake, Nakadake, Nekodake, Eboshidake, and Kishimadake. The highest peak is Takadake, with an elevation of 1592m.

Komeduka

Komeduka, with a height of about 80m, features a distinctive topography formed by an eruption approximately 3300 years ago. It is characterized by its inverted bowl shape and a large depression at the top. The slopes are covered with soft grassland, providing a beautiful green vista from spring to summer.

Aso Panorama Line

The Aso Panorama Line is a general term for the climbing road to Mount Aso in Kumamoto Prefecture, extending from the center of the Aso caldera to the summit. This road runs through beautiful grasslands, offering a spectacular view of Nakadake, which emits smoke, and the outer rim mountains surrounding the caldera.

2.Reviews

・The steam rising from the crater was a spectacular sight that allowed us to feel the power of nature. It is possible to drive up close to the crater. Along the way, we could see past craters, making it an excellent experience.

There is a legend that Komeduka was formed by the rice harvested by the god of Aso Shrine. The massive amount of rice piled up is astonishing. The landscape is truly mystical, and the view of the clouds combined with Komeduka was breathtaking.

The Aso Panorama Line, which extends south from JR Aso Station, is a classic drive route where you can look at Mount Aso while heading south. Along the road, vast pastures spread out, with cows and horses grazing. From this route, you can enjoy a drive while gazing at the magnificent scenery of Mount Aso. Further along, you will find Kusasenri-ga-hama and the entrance to the Aso Ropeway leading to the Mount Aso crater.

5.Map Information

Aso City is located in the northeastern part of Kumamoto Prefecture, about 50km from Kumamoto City. Aso City is blessed with a wealth of attractive resources, including stunning natural landscapes, beautiful rural scenery, historic heritage, and local culture and traditions. It also serves as a hub for north-south and east-west exchanges in Kyushu.
