1.Basic Information

Hakodate, the gateway to Hokkaido, is a charming city where you can enjoy Japan’s representative beautiful night views, Goryokaku which served as a stage for the Meiji Restoration, and the beautiful scenery of each of the four seasons.

Night View of Hakodate

The night view from Mount Hakodate is often hailed as one of Japan’s three major night views. Known as the “million-dollar night view,” you can overlook the Tsugaru Strait and Hakodate Bay from this observation deck. To enjoy the view, a ropeway is available, which allows you to appreciate the scenery as you ascend to the mountain summit. The ropeway usually operates at 10-minute intervals, and the ride only takes about 3 minutes.

Hachiman-Zaka Slope (Hachimanzaka)

Hachiman-Zaka Slope is another popular tourist spot in Hakodate, alongside the night view from Mount Hakodate. The slope is named after a former Hakodate Hachiman Shrine that once stood here. The path is beautifully maintained, and the walkway includes handrails and steps. Road heating is provided during winter, making it a safe walk. The once winding road now extends straight toward the sea. From this path, you can see the Mashu-Maru, a museum ship anchored in the harbor.

Goryokaku (Goryoukaku)

Goryokaku is a rare star-shaped castle built in Hakodate at the end of the Edo period. It is famous for being the stage for the Hakodate War between the new government forces and the old Shogunate. Most of the buildings within the castle were dismantled during the Meiji period and converted into an army training ground. In 1914, the site was opened to the public as Goryokaku Park, and in 1964, the 60-meter-tall Goryokaku Tower was inaugurated.

Koyukien Garden during Autumn (Kousetuen)

Koyukien Garden, situated near Yunokawa Hot Springs, was originally built as a villa by a wealthy merchant in 1898. It is also known as a spot for autumn foliage, and the leaf-peeping event with light-up features from late October to early November is awe-inspiring.

Sea of Clouds Night View (Unkai-Yakei)

At certain rare moments, clouds originating from the Tsugaru Strait cover the city of Hakodate, creating a magical “Sea of Clouds Night View” along with the night lights. This phenomenon occurs a few times a year, mainly in June. Many photographers and enthusiasts gather at the summit of Mount Hakodate to capture this precious moment.
