1.Basic Information

One of Japan’s three major gorges, Kurobe Gorge (Kurobekyoukoku), was formed over a long period by the Kurobe River as surrounding mountains with elevations over 3,000 meters rose. This gorge is known for its breathtaking scenery where beautiful blue waters flow at the bottom of steep cliffs, reflecting fresh green leaves and autumn foliage on the water’s surface.

Once an untouched natural sanctuary that was difficult for people to access, the development of hydroelectric power in the early 20th century led to the introduction of a railway to the area. Nowadays, you can enjoy a roughly 1-hour-20-minute journey on a trolley train through Kurobe Gorge.

Introduction to Eastern Japan's Udon: Part 2
Udon "tsuyu" in Eastern and Western Japan significantly differs. Eastern Japan typically uses "koikuchi tsuyu," a darker, richer seasoning. In contrast, Western Japan prefers "usukuchi tsuyu," which is lighter in both flavor and color. The dividing line for these tastes isn't definite but generally falls around the Aichi-Mie prefectural border, Sekigahara in Shiga, and near Toyama City in Toyama Prefecture.
