One of Japan’s three major gorges, Kurobe Gorge (Kurobekyoukoku), was formed over a long period by the Kurobe River as surrounding mountains with elevations over 3,000 meters rose. This gorge is known for its breathtaking scenery where beautiful blue waters flow at the bottom of steep cliffs, reflecting fresh green leaves and autumn foliage on the water’s surface.
Kurobe Gorge Trolley Train
Once an untouched natural sanctuary that was difficult for people to access, the development of hydroelectric power in the early 20th century led to the introduction of a railway to the area. Nowadays, you can enjoy a roughly 1-hour-20-minute journey on a trolley train through Kurobe Gorge.

Unazuki Hot Springs is also known as the gateway to Kurobe Gorge and boasts some of Japan’s top-quality hot springs with impressive water clarity. The Kurobe River basin is located in a region in Japan with high rainfall and snowfall. The amount of precipitation increases the further upstream you go. Heavy rains often occur from June to July due to the seasonal rain front, and heavy snowfall from December to March provides abundant water resources.
